Distance from the Dining Table:

  • For taller ceilings, consider raising the light slightly. Generally, for every foot of ceiling height, the pendant light can be raised approximately 3 inches.

Distance from the Floor:

  • If your dining table is a standard height of approximately 30 inches, the total height from the base of the pendant light to the floor is typically between 60-66 inches.

 

Bedroom: The height at which a bedroom pendant light should be installed depends on its function and location.

Above the Bed:

  • If you're using a pendant light instead of a bedside lamp, it's typically mounted above the nightstand, approximately 50-52 inches off the floor. This allows for easy access and doesn't interfere with daily activities.

Center of the Room:

  • Ceiling Height: The above figures are based on a typical 8-foot ceiling in the United States. If your ceiling is higher, adjust accordingly by adding 2-3 inches for every foot of height.
  • Light Fixture Size: The size of the light fixture also affects the mounting height. Larger or wider fixtures may require a higher mounting height to avoid appearing crowded.

 

Dining Room Pendant Light Installation Distance

Whether the luminaire's diameter is 17.7", 25.6", or 34.6", the most important installation principle is to ensure the base of the luminaire is at the appropriate distance from the tabletop.

Distance from the Table:

The base of the pendant light should be hung 30-36 inches above the tabletop. This distance is the most common installation height in a typical American home and ensures that the light is focused on the tabletop without obstructing diners' view.

  • 17.7" Pendant Light: This size is moderate. You can install the luminaire in the middle of the recommended range, for example, approximately 33 inches from the tabletop, to achieve a balanced view.
  • 25.6" Pendant Light: This larger size provides a wider light coverage. To maintain the visual openness of the space, it's recommended to install the luminaire higher, 34-36 inches from the tabletop.
  • 34.6" Pendant Light: This is a very large luminaire and is generally suitable for larger dining rooms with higher ceilings. To avoid a fixture appearing too "heavy" or "overwhelming," the optimal mounting distance is generally around 36 inches, the upper end of the recommended range.

These three dimensions apply to all fixtures, even if they vary in size. For larger fixtures, you might prefer to hang them higher up the recommended range to achieve better visual balance and avoid an overwhelmed look.

 

Distance Between Installed Pendant Light

If you plan to install multiple pendant lights in your dining room, the spacing between them is also very important.

Light Fixture Spacing:

A common general rule is to keep the distance between two pendant lights equal to or slightly larger than the diameter of one of the lights. Alternatively, you can use the following formula to determine spacing:
