Search any forum for alabaster lighting and one anxiety keeps surfacing: “will it yellow?” Usually asked about the stone; almost always answered wrong. The honest answer involves a little material science, a little LED history, and a bulb-buying spec you can write on an index card. Here is all three — plus the wattage math for stone fixtures, which works differently than most people assume.
The Myth, Autopsied
The yellowing reputation is real — and it is inherited, not current. It comes from two dead technologies. Incandescent and halogen heat: decades ago, 100-watt bulbs ran hot enough to bake dust and organic film onto shades of every material; the amber tint people remember on grandmother’s fixtures was cooked residue, not changed stone. Early LED phosphor decay: first-generation warm LEDs shifted yellow-green as their phosphor coatings aged, tinting whatever they lit. Modern branded LEDs run cool and hold their color point for tens of thousands of hours. The stone itself? Gypsum is geologically stable — the mineral color that took millions of years to form does not care about your light fixture. Alabaster does not yellow. Heat residue and cheap bulbs do.

The Wattage Math Stone Changes
Translucent stone eats more light than glass — roughly a third to a half of a bulb’s output is absorbed and re-radiated as that signature surface glow rather than passing into the room. So the planning number is lumens after stone: a 700-lumen bulb inside an alabaster shade delivers about 400–450 useful lumens to the room, gorgeous ones. Practically: bedside pendants want 450–600 lumen bulbs; dining rings 600–800 per shade; and a stone fixture meant to light a whole room alone is a planning mistake — stone is a glow instrument, not a floodlight, which is exactly why the layered-room recipe exists.

Heat: The Number That Actually Protects Your Stone
The one genuine bulb risk to alabaster is sustained heat in enclosed shades — not because stone burns, but because heat accelerates the film-baking that causes the false yellowing above. The rule: LED only, 10 watts actual draw or less per enclosed shade (that is a 60–75W-equivalent — more than enough), and never halogen retrofits in stone fixtures, whatever the socket accepts. If Your Stone Already Looks Yellow
Good news: it is almost certainly recoverable, because it is almost certainly film. What never works: bleach, “whitening” cleaners, or sanding, all of which trade a removable film for permanent surface damage.
