The craftsmanshipThe Art Glass DifferenceWhy hand-cast art glass beats molded glass & resin, the many shapes our artisans create, and how to spot the real thing. ▦ Material comparison ✦ One craft, many shapes 🔍 Spot genuine glass Open
Hand-cast art glass vs. molded glass vs. resin
Three materials look similar in a thumbnail — but live very differently on your wall. Here's how our hand-cast art glass compares.
| Our Hand-Cast Art Glass | Molded / Pressed Glass | Resin / Acrylic Imitation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it's made | Hand-cast & shaped by artisans, one piece at a time | Machine-pressed in a fixed mold, mass-produced | Liquid resin poured into a mold, mass-produced |
| Texture & pattern | Unique crackle texture — no two tubes alike | Identical, repeating pattern on every unit | Flat, "printed-on" look; texture feels superficial |
| Light quality | Deep, layered glow; light refracts through real glass | Even but flat; little depth or movement | Dull, slightly cloudy; can look plasticky when lit |
| Feel & weight | Substantial, cool, solid in the hand | Solid but uniform | Noticeably light, warm, hollow-feeling |
| Color over time | Color is in the glass — won't fade or yellow | Stable color | Can yellow or cloud with heat & UV over time |
| Heat tolerance | High — glass handles bulb heat well | High | Lower — can warp or discolor near heat |
| Character | A one-of-a-kind work of glass art | A functional, uniform fixture | A budget look-alike |
The takeaway: hand-cast art glass costs more to make, but it's the only one that gives you genuine depth of light, individual character, and lasting color — the qualities that make a fixture feel like art rather than hardware.
One craft, many shapes
Every piece begins the same way — molten glass, hand-cast and shaped by our artisans. From that single craft comes a whole family of forms, each catching and releasing light in its own way.

How to spot genuine art glass
Online photos can make resin and glass look alike. Here's how to tell the difference once it's in your home — every point below describes our fixtures.
Pick it up
Real glass is cool and substantial. Resin feels warm, light, and hollow. Our tubes have real weight — many customers say the heavy box was their first clue it's genuine.
Look at the texture
Hand-cast crackle texture has true depth you can feel with a fingertip. Resin texture looks like it's printed on a flat surface.
Turn on the light
Glass refracts light into a layered, moving glow. Resin tends to look flat, dull, or slightly cloudy when lit.
Compare two pieces
No two hand-cast tubes are exactly identical. If every piece looks machine-perfect and matched, it's molded — not artisan glass.
Our promise: every fixture is genuine hand-cast art glass. Slight variation between pieces isn't a flaw — it's proof it was made by hand.
Light that has to cross several leaves before it reaches you.
The components of the Verdine Amber Fern Leaf Chandelier feature both curvature and ribbing—each glass piece curves outward like a leaf, with a surface textured by fine, parallel vertical lines. This design gives rise to two distinctive characteristics. The curve means every leaf catches light at a different angle from its neighbour, so a row of them is never evenly lit. The ribs vary the thickness of the glass, and thinner glass passes more light, so each leaf is banded along its own length. Nothing on this fixture is a flat glowing surface.
The leaves overlap like scales, and light has to pass through more than one of them on its way out. That is why the amber deepens toward the centre of the fixture and pales at the tips — the colour is not painted on in gradient, it is thickness doing the work. Amber glass warms a room rather than colouring it, provided the lamp is right. Use 2700K warm white — a cool lamp fights the amber and turns it muddy. Against pale plaster and white walls the fixture becomes the only warm thing in the room, which is the effect it is designed for.
-
1
Curved and Ribbed, Not FlatEach leaf bows outward like a frond and carries fine parallel lines down its length. The curve means no two leaves catch the light at the same angle; the ribs vary the glass thickness, and thinner glass passes more light. So every leaf is banded along itself and shaded across itself.
-
2
The Colour Comes From ThicknessThe leaves overlap like scales, so light has to pass through more than one on its way out. That is why the amber deepens toward the centre of the fixture and pales at the tips — it is not a printed gradient, it is depth of glass doing the work.
-
3
Different From Every FloorHung in a stairwell, the tiers separate and re-form as you climb. The piece you see from the landing is not the piece you saw from the hall — which is something a flat-plate chandelier cannot do, and the reason this shape belongs in a space with more than one level.
-
4
Every Leaf on Its Own FittingNothing is set into a moulded panel. Each leaf hangs independently, which is why one chipped leaf is unhooked and replaced on its own rather than the whole chandelier coming down from a stairwell ceiling.
Dimensions & Placement

-
Stairwell — Where It Belongs FirstHang the lowest leaf at least 7 ft (2.1 m) above the highest tread beneath it — measured from the step, not from the floor below. Then check it from the landing: in a stairwell the fixture is seen at eye level from upstairs, so hang it so the middle tiers sit at that height rather than the top.
-
Double-Height Entry or FoyerSize up rather than down here. A fixture read from twenty feet away and from two levels needs more presence than the same room at single height would suggest. Keep 7 ft of clearance above any floor people walk on.
-
A Tall Dining RoomOver a table, hang the lowest leaf 30–36″ (75–90 cm) above the surface. It works here only if the ceiling has the height to carry it — otherwise the fixture sits in the room rather than above it.
-
Where It Must Not GoNot a standard 8 ft room — at this scale it will loom rather than hang. And rated IP20: no bathroom, nothing above a bath or shower, no laundry, no covered porch. Those need a damp- or wet-rated fixture.

What Makes It Special
Look at the lit photograph and the colour is not even — it is richest in the middle of the fixture and pales toward the tips of the outer leaves. That is not a printed gradient or a spray finish. The leaves overlap, so light near the centre has to travel through two or three thicknesses of glass before it escapes, while light at the outer tips crosses only one. Depth of glass is doing the work, which is why the effect holds from every angle instead of only from the one the photograph was taken at — and why it becomes more pronounced, not less, when the fixture is dimmed.
A flat-plate chandelier presents the same face wherever you stand. This one does not, and in a stairwell that is the entire argument for it. From the hall below you read the underside — the tiers overlapping into one continuous glowing mass. From halfway up, the rows separate and you see the gaps between them. From the landing, you are level with the middle tiers and looking across rather than up, which is a different fixture again. It is the one place a chandelier is seen from three heights in the course of thirty seconds, and this shape is built to reward that.
Diameter, height, finish, the number of lights, the length of chain — all of it can be changed before the piece is made. On a fixture of this scale that matters more than usual: a stairwell is never a standard size, and the difference between a chandelier that fills the void and one that hangs apologetically in it is often a matter of inches. Send us the ceiling height, the drop you want and a photograph looking up, and we will build to it. It is also why the glass is hung leaf by leaf rather than moulded into panels — a fixture assembled from individual pieces can be made in any configuration, and a single damaged leaf can be replaced without the chandelier coming down.

We Craft It
Made to spec and inspected before it ships.
Hanging Height
Every fixture ships with a 150 cm / 59″ chain, shortened at installation by removing links — so the drop is set in your room, not at our factory.
Please contact us if you require a longer length.
Raked or Vaulted Ceilings
Standard canopies are flat, so a specific style is required for sloped ceilings. Please contact us if you need a model designed for sloped ceiling installation.

Light That Crosses Three Leaves
The colour is not painted on. It is depth of glass.
Look at this fixture lit and the amber is not even. It is richest at the centre and pales toward the tips of the outer leaves — and that is not a printed gradient or a sprayed finish. The leaves overlap like scales, so light near the middle has to travel through two or three thicknesses of glass before it escapes, while light at the outer edges crosses only one.
Depth is doing the work, which is why the effect holds from every angle rather than only from the one the photograph was taken at — and why it becomes more pronounced as you dim it, not less.
Each leaf is also curved and ribbed, which adds two more things. The bow means no two leaves catch the light at the same angle, so a row of them is never evenly lit. The ribs vary the glass thickness along the leaf's own length, and thinner glass passes more, so each one is banded down itself. Nothing on this fixture is a flat glowing panel, and nothing on it is a visible bulb.
All of which is why it belongs in a space with height. In a room with an eight-foot ceiling a fixture like this simply looms. In a stairwell it comes into its own — because a stairwell is the one place in a house where a chandelier is seen from three different heights in the course of thirty seconds.
From the Hall Below
You read the underside: tiers overlapping into one continuous glowing mass, with no lamp visible anywhere in it.
Halfway Up
The rows separate. You see the gaps between the tiers and the curve of each leaf against the one behind it.
From the Landing
Level with the middle tiers, looking across rather than up. A different fixture again — which is why you hang it to sit at this height.
Three heights, thirty seconds — and never the same twice.
Before You Order
The room it needs, the bulb it wants, and how to hang it in a stairwell.
01Is it too big for my room?
Check this before anything else. This is a statement fixture sized for a stairwell, a double-height entry or a tall dining room.
In a standard 8 ft room it will not hang — it will loom. If your ceiling is ordinary, tell us the height and we'll build a smaller version rather than sell you one that fights the room.
02Will it make my room look orange?
No — with the right bulb. Use 2700K warm white. Amber glass warms a room rather than tinting it.
A cool or daylight lamp behind amber glass turns it muddy and slightly green. The warmth you see in our photograph is the glass and the lamp working together. Same bulb in every socket.
03How high do I hang it in a stairwell?
Two measurements. The lowest leaf should clear the highest tread beneath it by at least 7 ft — measured from the step, not the floor below.
Then check it from upstairs: in a stairwell you see the fixture at eye level from the landing, so hang it with the middle tiers at that height rather than the top.
04Why is the colour uneven?
05Will I see the bulbs?
06What bulbs does it take?
07Will my ceiling take the weight?
08How do I clean it?
Power off, let the bulbs cool, then a soft dry brush down the leaves rather than wiping each one. No ammonia sprays.
Be realistic about access: in a stairwell this needs a tower or a professional, once a year. Worth planning for before you buy.
09Can I change the size or the chain?
10If a leaf breaks? Where can't it go?
Replaced on its own — every leaf hangs on its own fitting, so the chandelier stays up. Photos within 24 hours if damaged in transit; spares held after that.
Indoor, dry rooms only — IP20, no water protection. Not above a bath, in a shower, or on a covered porch.
Send us your ceiling height and a photo looking up — we will tell you what size actually fits the space.
Two Guides, Written for This
Most installation questions come up twice — once when you are deciding where a light goes, and again when it is in your hands. We wrote one guide for each.
Installation Scenario Guide
Which room, which size, and how high. Read this before you order, while the choice is still open and nothing has been drilled.
- How high to hang over a table, an island, a stairwell
- Matching fixture size to room size and table width
- Clearance in walkways, and what a low ceiling changes
- Where a fixture should not go at all
Installation Process Guide
The fitting itself, step by step. Read this when the box arrives — ideally before you open it.
- Unpacking glass safely, and what to check on arrival
- Junction box weight, support, and when to add a brace
- Wiring, canopy fitting, and setting the chain length
- Why two people make almost every fixture easier
